Breaking Down the Action:
- What’s Happened So Far?
- Negreanu Starts as Favourite Again
- Who Will Win? Our Verdict
In the first bout, things got heated. From the pre-match hype to the 5lb bag of Sour Patch Kids, everything was larger than life. The second round of the High Stakes Duel between Phil Hellmuth and Daniel Negreanu takes place tonight, exclusively on PokerGO.
We’ve taken a look at the latest odds via our friends at Bovada and will break down who we think will win on the night as well as how we see the match panning out.
What’s Happened So Far?
In the end, the result in the firs duel was an against-the-odds victory for The Poker Brat against Kid Poker as Phil Hellmuth recovered from a deficit of 3,000 to 97,000 chips to reign supreme for a $100,000 win.
As Phil Hellmuth told us himself, he considered Daniel Negreanu to be ‘delusional’ in writing off his chances before the first but even began. That delusion was due to a lack of respect Hellmuth saw from his fraternity as a whole towards the 15-time bracelet winner who thoroughly deserves to be spoken about as the ‘GOAT’ (or Greatest of All-Time).
We learned plenty from the comeback win for Hellmuth, but who might win in the second bout? There’s no love lost between the two great frenemies, that’s for sure.
Negreanu Starts as Favorite Again
Hellmuth’s famous comeback against Negreanu in the first bout had a warning with it against complacency for Kid Poker. 97,000 to 3,000 up at one stage, there’s simply no way he should be losing from that position and while publicly he was all smiles about the defeat, he had not anticipated it in any way.
In the PokerGO hype show, Nick Schulman and Ali Nejad discussed exactly how Hellmuth came back in the first bout and what might have happened in between the first match-up and this one.
Let’s take a look at that Hype Show and some of the key areas where Schulman and Nejad break down the way the match got away from Kid Poker.
Who Will Win? Our Verdict
Negreanu will likely ditch the sight gags and visual references in the second High Stakes Duel II bout tonight, and as such, should be backed at -180 in our opinion. Hellmuth has had a superb run of four wins on the bounce in this format, and still represents great value in the market at +140, but we have a feeling Negreanu will win tonight.
That does not mean we think Negreanu will crush Hellmuth over the whole bout. We can very much see Hellmuth come back for another go and triumph in the third part of the fight. That could round out the trilogy and see another person take on Hellmuth for at least part of their roll, if not their entire poker bank balance.
Taking place for $200,000, High Stakes Duel II (Round 2) kicks off on Wednesday May 5th at 8pm Eastern exclusively on PokerGO.
“There is no possible way I would say no to a rematch with Phil Hellmuth.” As Daniel Negreanu famously said before the first bout. We might be about to find out just how true those words really are.
We’ll be back tomorrow with all the action as soon as the cards are back in the pack as this fascinating battle between two poker legends plays out yet again.
